Entrepreneur Exchange? BOOMSTARTUP!

What do you think of the idea? What do you think about entrepreneurs having a place to get together and meet and find other entrepreneurs or entrepreneurial minded people to help start businesses? (More on this idea later)

I recently attended a great Networking Event that has this element to it. They are looking at funding businesses over the summer and mentoring them (this is a good thing) and then helping them present to Angels and VC’s at the end of the summer. I don’t know the exact numbers but I think your chance of funding jumps from about 5% to 67% with Angels or VC’s when you have a mentor.

So here is the pitch if this interests you!

The last event I went to only had 3 developers show, so if you are technical this is for you as many of the people who were there have ideas and hopefully money with a need for someone to build their software product / services.

If you are entrepreneurial you need to come. If you are not and are looking to potentially find your next employer / job, come too.

Here are the details – You can RSVP through the following links – Hope to see you there!

BoomStartup will be holding two events this coming Friday. One in PROVO and the other in SALT LAKE.

SALT LAKE CITY EVENT: http://bit.ly/c2yq3i
PROVO EVENT: http://bit.ly/abajLm

LOOKING FOR A PROGRAMMER/TECH PARTNER?
LOOKING FOR A BUSINESS PARTNER GUY?

This event is to help PROGRAMMERS and BIZ PEOPLE connect, expand their networks, and to form strong teams.

1) Strong teams
2) Good idea

What if you don’t have an idea for BoomStartup to fund? No problem, this is an open event for the entire community. The purpose is to help individuals build strong teams. Who knows, maybe you’re the missing piece to a great idea!

This is also a great place to help your team become more familiar with the BoomStartup’s investor-mentors. Before the event is over, make sure that we get a chance to meet you there.

SLC
We are in room: Room MPDC 209/213

Fear is not a Growth Strategy!

Come out of our Shells

I have had this thought in my head bugging me for the past week.  I read it somewhere in passing and didn’t give it a second thought but the phrase has loomed ever bigger each day.  After much searching online and through magazines I had read recently I tracked it down in ENTREPRENEUR – written by Amy Cosper, the Editor in chief.

Here are a couple of her quotes.

“The situation (of the economy) is making normally rational people act like loonies.  It’s fear. And its a real business issue these days.  But fear makes for a really crappy growth strategy.”

“When you let fear infiltrate your strategic plan, you will fail to thrive in any economy.  After all, fearlessness is what distinguishes entrepreneurial DNA.”

For the purpose of my thoughts I don’t compare fear equally with stress.  Stress can be saved for another day and is often a great motivator.  Especially if you procrastinate.   (Here is an article in my cousins blog about procrastination http://tinyurl.com/cewrap )

I have thought more about the title above and the impact fear has had on me and my business.  I have seen as many if not more fillable jobs over the past few months but my team has been unable to fill many of these positions due to finding qualified candidates that are filled with fear.  They are afraid of an (better) opportunity because of this fear that has been fed to them.  I don’t blame them.  At times I have felt this same fear and have stayed up nights wondering if my business will survive.

Fear lends itself to failure and lack of fear doesn’t always eliminate failure but it does improve your chance of success.  Fear can also be a strong motivating factor.  Think of times of fear and how your adrenaline surged through your body and heightened your senses  and increased your strength.  These times of heightened stress are often followed by a time of weakness or even sickness.  So fear can be a short-term motivating tool with a significant physical and/or emotional hangover.

This has had me thinking about my fear and how I have let it affect my business.  I have cut back spending, laid off poor performers, and generally tightened my belt.  These things in themselves are not always bad things for a business to do to survive but can become detrimental when the actions are a result of fear.

Here is where I think the opportunity lies.  While those around us are acting or reacting to fear we need to take advantage of this time to solidify our strength.  If you want to grow put your fears aside and find a strategy that will lead you to growth.

I think of Peter when Jesus called him to walk upon the water.  As soon as Peter took his eyes off Jesus (his goal) and let fear enter his heart he began to sink.  We are called to succeed in the things we do – keep our eyes on the goal and keep fear from our hearts, and we will more likely achieve the growth we desire.

If you have this fear set a goal today to change eliminate it from your heart.  Think of a strategy to improve your current circumstance.  We are in the midst of an economic recession.  Don’t let it become a personal recession.  Use this time for personal and professional growth!

Please comment and let me know your thoughts on this.  I always look forward to replies.

PUT IN to GET OUT

Bear with me!  This is a new idea for me to actually write something in detail about my efforts in social networking.  Or to write in my blog at all.  I started my social networking years ago and joined linkedin and facebook.  More recently I set up my own blog at www.whatgut.com and set up twitter feeds for myself twitter.com/gutblue and for Who Blue at twitter.com/whoblue.  Now What?  What do I do next.  I can look at my social networks and contact the people I know to see if they need a new job.  But what am I really building?  Do I link with all mankind on Linkedin or to fewer people that I know or want to build a relationship with.  I chose the latter.  I am not sure it is the best choice but I am not an extrovert and I like to know who I know.

Just a couple more questions and I will give you my thoughts:

How do you recruit with social networks?  Is a former social network, the telephone, still the best way?

Should you promote your company or yourself?

Is todays “company” really “YOU“?  (Are you really always just building YOU even when you promote your company?)

Should I write THIS when no one will probably read it?  Is this just a waste of my time?

Are social networks just that “SOCIAL”?  Do they have a business purpose?

Here are my social efforts so far:  Sorry if I repeat myself here:

1.  Setup an account for myself on Linkedin – Waited

2.  Setup a facebook account – Waited

3.  Joined alot of other networking sites like ere, ning, and several I don’t remember.  Waited so long I can’t remember the sites, user ID’s or passwords.

4.  Created my own WordPress blog www.whatgut.com , oh wait, you are here if you are reading this.

5.  Wrote several posts

6.  Waited  And Waited

7.  Joined Twitter  Me and my Company  www.twitter.com/gutblue  www.twitter.com/whoblue

8.  Automated my companies job postings to post to Twitter account

9.  Waited and Realized nothing was happening

10.  Realized I have to put in something to get something out

Here I am with my first attempt to PUT IN.  I am curious to see what I get out.

I look forward to hearing any response and promise that I will continue to PUT IN!

Good Music & Learning!

Maybe I am dating myself by saying so but it seems like for the past 10+ years there has been a lack of new music / bands I have really enjoyed.  Maybe this is due to my bypassing the age of impressionism (teenager).  Maybe it is really true that it is harder to learn when we are older.  Maybe other things have grabbed my attention (kids, work, etc.) and I have become too busy.  I recently decided to go to playlist.com and realized that I really missed my old music.  Some of these bands are Yaz, The Alarm, Oingo Boingo. See my current play-list on the right! ——->

Is it true that we stop learning or do we just become more set in the content we expose ourselves to.  I have made a goal to pick up a new book and find a new good author and listen to the radio to find a new band or song.  Read more than what presents itself on the internet.  Search deeply on topics that interest me and become more like a teenager in becoming a fan or proponent of an idea, or matter-of-fact, even a new song!

REDWOODS

We recently decided our children were old enough for a road-trip.  You know the kind you take in college where you don’t really plan anything other than you have a set amount of time you can be away, and you have a set amount of money you can spend.  In college that is usually away as long as you want and money close to or equal to zero.  We have a dvd player in the car and room for all so we thought this would be a great idea and left our home with much anticipation of a enjoyable, stress free, fun vacation.  Take out the stress free and minus some of the fun and picture a 2 month old baby and three rowdy boys in a car for 1 1/2 weeks.  Not a great recipe for success.  All things aside I believe it was one of our more memorable vacations.  Best of all we survived and saw a lot of cool things.  Pictures to come later!

Who do you Love?

Last night my next door neighboor and two of his children died in a accident returning from Lake Powell.  My son was good friends with their 7 year old daughter who died.  It is a tragedy and my deepest sympathy goes to their mother and family.  I read alot of news comments that focused on what they may have been doing wrong.  It is a tragedy that we try to justify or explain accidents as a fault of a person or what they were doing.  Most accidents are truly just that an accident.  Have you ever wandered from your lane or just looked down at your cell phone.  That is when accidents happen.  This family loved life and lived it to its fullest.  He is a great guy and would do anything for you at any time.  They truly knew how to love those around them.  We need to get up off our butts and find out who we love and let them know it.  We need to show our love through actions and not just words.  We need to realize that life is precious and short and it can end for any one of us or our loved ones immediately.  Prepare for tomorrow but live life for today.  Like the saying goes when we die we aren’t going to say we wish we would have worked more but we are going say we wish we would have been able to spend more time with the ones we love!

The Gift of Sight! A Worthy Cause!

This is an email I recently received from my Mom. I watched the movie and realize with the potential for Macular Degeneration in my family that the gift of sight is a great one and we should help all we can to provide this to others. Especially when it is as simple as this.

“Hi all, don’t hate me, but I really dislike the saying “Good intentions pave the way to hell” because I know I’m surely almost there. I think many of you have good intentions, but just put it off and then it is to late. I really hate asking for money, but I also have a pricking conscience. We Americans spend $20. without batting an eye for some thing we think we need. Well how about needing your eyesight? Whew, I’ll probably make enimies with that one. Anyway, in case you ever intended here’s what to do again. Make your check payable to “Mothers Without Borders” earmarked E for Z and I promise you 100 % of it will go just for that. If you would rather not mail it to me, I could care less, but mail it to Mary Ellen Messick, P.O. Box 2184, Orem, Utah 84059. Thanks so much, but I don’t think I need to thank you, you will feel better.”

Please consider giving and please at least watch this video.

iPhone

I have an iPhone. My last phone was a “smartphone” pocketPC wm5 device from Sprint. I am not going to blubber the wonders of the iPhone. It cost me too much money. I was criticized for this. I don’t own a Mac, or an Apple computer. Don’t know how to use them. On my iPhone the browser often crashes. Thankfully crashes means closes unexpectedly. I can’t add my own software. Edge is slower than EVDO. Everyone has passwords on their WiFi. I own my own business. I use my phone for business. It isn’t built for businesses.  It does everything I need in business.  I spent over 3 hours on the phone with AT&T trying to change to a personal account and put the iPhone on it. I don’t use the iPhones mail client (much). I use mobile hosted gmail. I use my iPhone and it makes me happy. It does everything my old phone did.  Alot of things don’t work or aren’t on the iPhone. I get happier every day I use it. It reads my thoughts. My pocket doesn’t bulge as much. My wife is happier. Now she is mad. This iPhone didn’t change anything. Wait!

Free CRM and ATS

vTiger – vTiger CRM www.vtiger.com is an open source CRM broken off from SugarCRM. The newest version 5 includes a bunch of Ajax and other fun aspects that makes this a powerful FREE solution or alternative to Salesforce.com and other Online CRM’s. Did I mention it is FREE! It doesn’t take alot of knowledge but some dedication and learning to set it up and configure it for your needs. It can be a great tool for any business that sells services or products and needs to manage it’s clients relationships.

CATS – CATS Candidate Applicant Tracking System – www.catsone.com – If you are in the business of hiring (which every business is) this is a great system to track your candidates. If your business is to recruit and find people for clients then this system is a dream. I came across this recently and within 3 days had completely moved our vTiger database and all users to this system. It is intuitive to the recruiting process and allows our employees to become incredibly more productive in their day. Please check it out and support CATS efforts. Again did I mention this is FREE! FREE! You will need a server to host it on but it can be done on almost any type of system both windows and linux.
